Inspired by the legendary violent behavior of the notorious Major League Baseball icon Jimmy Piersall (b. 1929), FEAR STRIKES OUT is a dangerous whirlwind of paranoia, passion and explosive action for the soloist and the wind ensemble. Although later in his career he was traded around to Cleveland, New York and Los Angeles, Jimmy Piersall's primary team was the Boston Red Sox (1950-58), the team that was (is) also THE lifelong team for the director of this consortium, New England-native Gary Shaw. FSO was commissioned byGary Shaw and a consortium of 20 American trombonists and wind ensembles.
