André Chailleux (1904–1984), a composer and organist who graduated from the Paris Conservatoire, composed Andante et Allegro for alto saxophone and piano in 1958. It is a work of medium difficulty, with all the ingredients needed for students to progress – a good sense of phrasing; fingering dexterity; different modes of articulation and expression; contrasting sonorities; simple and compound time signatures, etc. – which has established itself comfortably in the pedagogical literature of saxophonists over generations.
