Concerto in D Major, Op. 35
Rixner wrote a five-part Suite entitled Have a Good Weekend in 1940, the last movement of which became a real hit: a paso doble called the Spanish March. Presented here in an accessible piano trio arrangement.
This short trio combines angular lines and troubling chromaticism to create a highly effective piece of mood music with an empty, eerie feel to it. A beautiful and poignant work in memory of the cellist Christopher van Kampen, Turnage wrote this piece to mark the life of a great friend.
Cortège for Chris
Originally composed for piano, this attractive cantabile work earned Rubinstein the world renown he had so desired for the rest of his many compositions. Indeed, it is not his symphonies and operas, nor his sonatas or songs, but this musical mood piece which has stood the test of time.
